I am shocked to hear of Ricks passing. He was a great friend in high school, and we almost had fun in our classes. I remember that his house was near Bay Shore Drive in and he told me how he would watch movies on the big screen, but without sound! He was trying to think of a way to run a wire into his house so that he could listen to the movies he was watching! I guess that is why he ended up in making movies and producing TV shows. May he rest in peace...

Remembering Rick. He was my first agent, with Hesseltine-Baker, and then APA, before he moved on to an extraordinary 2nd (and defining) career as a producer. He was a fierce, loyal advocate for his writers and always generous. He believed in us, and we were better artists (and people) because of it, ever grateful for his unstinting support. I owe my career to him, no hyperbole. Prayers for his wonderful children, and spouse, Joe.

So,so sorry to hear about Rick's death. I went to school with him from the 6th grade and will always remember his kindness and wonderful sense of humor. So many memories of my youth involve Rick, or "Rickey" as we called him then. As the years passed, I was so happy to see the great joy he had with his wonderful family. He was so proud of them! Katie and Cayla were so close during their years at CEE and Harvard Westlake, and with their friendship came the privilege of our families being very close. We spent countless dinners together (mostly cooked by Rick and Joe), and I have wonderful memories of their family joining mine at Thanksgiving and Hanukkah.
The bond between Rick and Joe was so apparent; I can't even imagine them sharing a harsh word with one another. It was my honor to be at Rick and Joe's wedding, which was my first same-sex couple wedding. None of us had suspected that same-sex weddings would become legal during our lifetime.
Rick and I shared a love of movies and talked often about the entertainment industry that we were both a part of.
Rick was a wonderful father. I marveled at the way tasks were split up at their house. Rick make sure the tickets for a vacation were purchased and that he had his medicine bag. Joe helped the kids with homework and emotional support when they needed to talk through a social issue.
Joe, Katie, and David, I know that your loss and sadness is immeasurable right now and that this all feels like a bad dream. Cayla and I share your sadness and will hold on to our great memories of Rick, and hopefully be able to lend some support to you all.
With much love - Rochel

All relationships can be difficult, perhaps especially gay ones. When my partner's previous relationship ended one would think that they would just move on like most people.
My partner, James, and his previous partner, Joe remained friends. They each had met and started relationships with guys in the entertainment industry.
Joe and Rick lived in the NYC area and we lived in New Jersey. Although at one point we lived quite close, we were busy with careers and seldom had time to meet up socially.
Then Rick had business opportunities in LA, so they moved across country. Later the kids were born. Strangely, distance made us all closer. James and Joe had a history of friendship. Rick and I had a common interest in the entertainment industry. We all became buddies.
Whenever Rick, Joe and family visited they stayed in our NYC co-op and considered it "home base" in NYC.
Now after over 30 years of friendship, our unique relationship is changed forever.
We all got to enjoy each other's company way too infrequently and Rick left us way too soon. Rick you will be missed by so many, but especially by Joe, Katie and David.

Dearest Joe, Katie and David,
Please know how that our thoughts and sympathies have been with you from the moment we learned Rick had so suddenly passed. While we know all of you are surrounded by incredible family and friends, please let us know if there is anything we can do to help now or at any time in the future.
We remember Rick as one who put his family first with love, time, understanding and unreserved support for the aspirations of each of them. We know that his family completed his life and made it one he was not only grateful for but one for which he had no regrets.
Rick's good humor and commitment to the community of his faith as well as fairness and justice for those beyond his immediate circle are qualities we recall among so many others that honor his memory.
Of course, the real enduring legacy of Rick's life will always be you, his incredible family, as well as friends around the globe and professional colleagues --- he touched, changed and generously shared with all of us for the better and for all time.
All our love,
Barry, Chris & Hope

Rick and Joe became Jeremy's second parents. Jeremy and David were best friends through high school and Jeremy spent countless nights sleeping at Rick and Joes home hanging out with David and their crew of friends. The loss is too great to put into words and Jeremy is heartbroken and in disbelief and can't imagine the pain and loss suffered by his best friend David. Jeremy has enlisted in the IDF and can't be here but he wanted his second family and best friend to know he prays for Rick and will fight to defend Israel in his honor

Until August 30th 2017 there wasn't a day in my life without my cousin, Rick. He was the oldest of my close cousins, a role model and shinning star. I remember so many hilarious incidents at the Leed house in Bayshore, with my late Aunt Shirley, Uncle Marvin, cousins Rick, Patti and Jonathan - with Rick inevitably the instigator. My mother likes to say she was the favorite grandchild until Rick came along. We all grew up together, and as we reached the level of higher education, it was clear my cousin Rick was indeed the shinning star everyone expected him to be.
Rick achieved everything a person could wish for in life; great professional success, a long, loving relationship and beautiful children.
My deepest condolences to Joe, Katie and David, to Patti, Jonathan and their families.
When the shock and grief of his sudden death eases, I will surely remember my cousin Rick for the brilliant and unique person he was.
Love always, your cousin, Debbie

We send our love, hugs and blessings to Joe, Katie and David during this time of unimaginable grief. Wrapping our arms around you as you remember and honor Rick.
Rick was always a loving, caring, generous and supportive husband, dad, friend, colleague and advocate. Rick’s and Joe’s life-long relationship and marriage inspired me and set a great example as you built a wonderful life and beautiful family together. I watched with such respect how you both raised Katie and David as young children to being such kind and thoughtful young adults with bright futures. The love you shared and gave as parents is forever imprinted in their souls and DNA to carry forward on their life’s journey. Rick and Joe, well done.
Thanks for always keeping our family as part of the Zipkin-Leed family. Many gatherings, CEE events, basketball games, martial arts tests, picnics, coffee chats and other occasions over the years including a memorable Thanksgiving dinner in my tiny Brentwood apartment will forever be a part of us. I will especially hold dear the time spent together this past July here at the Taste of Chicago and Art Institute with Rick, Joe, Louis & Sharon on that scorching hot day where you all finally got to meet my President son Lincoln.
I will always remember Rick for his endless creativity, optimism and positivity. He was the master storyteller and reinventor. He always found the story in every situation and the positive qualities in everyone. Whenever we caught up, I would hear about Joe, the kids and Rick’s latest creative adventures which were often filled with fun, humor and intrigue. I was so blessed to have Rick as my supporter through life’s ups and downs and his compassion in my raising a child with learning differences and challenges. We always stayed in touch no matter what distance or time was between us. We even reached out in our “human sense crises” when I lost my hearing and he was having vision issues. Even in this, we found humor and laughter.
As many will attest, Rick had many professional and personal accomplishments throughout his life and career; however, his greatest joy came from his family. Joe, you were the love of his life for over 34 years. Katie and David, your dad was SO proud of you both and loved you with his whole heart. Rick's greatest legacy will always be you. ❤️❤️❤️
As much as my heart hurts right now, I will carry forward in the positive optimism that were Rick's trademark qualities. I am sure God has a new angel-coach helping him out these days.
Love Toby Wong and the President kids -- Lincoln & Madison -- in Chicago
