Alexander Arie Dane, 82, died Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at Somerford Place of Northridge. Following many years of declining health, he passed away peacefully in his sleep.
He was born in Tel Aviv, Israel (then Palestine) on June 2nd, 1937 to Ernest and Margaret Denenfeld. The family was sponsored by his great-aunt Francesca (Fannie) “Mama” Weiss and moved to Los Angeles, California when Alex was one and his sister, Esther, was three.
He grew up in various locations around Los Angeles and graduated from Fairfax High School in 1955. He attended Los Angeles State College (now Cal State LA) where he got his degree in Physical Education with a minor in Math.
He served in the California National Guard from 1960 to 1963.
He eventually found a career as a teacher and coach while completing a master’s degree in Math Education at CSUN. For 12 years he was math teacher and coach at Jefferson High School then transferred to Monroe High School for the remainder of his career before retiring in 2000. At Monroe High School he started and coached the girls’ basketball team for many years.
Alex’s passions over his life included running, playing golf, watching sports, movies, classical music and enjoying time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharlene (Stern) Dane; his son Elliot Dane, wife Jackie, and grandchildren Jacob and Abigail; his daughter Julia Eldridge, husband Locke, grandchildren Ava and Kiera; and many friends and family who’s lives he touched.
