Uncle Alex was my mother's brother and one of my favorite people. He was not only one of the most loving and empathetic people I've had the privilege to know, but one of the funniest and most intelligent. His interests, cultural and intellectual, were wide-ranging-- from a deep knowledge of classical music to cinema history and politics. If there were a little-known actor from a film from the 1920s that he thought had been sorely overlooked, he would tell you about his or her background and might even sing a tune from a film they were in. He used to call my mother, at odd hours of the night or day, to tune into a live recording of one of Leonard Bernstein's performances (back in the day), and he had a deep love of, and knowledge about, baseball and basketball. Having grown up with a father that was a European-trained engineer and architect, who would draft blueprints while listening to European football, Alex also had a tendency to grade students' math papers while watching Dodgers' games and talking politics, all at the same time. My best memories of Uncle Alex were having brunch with him and the family, while watching classic comedies (like Young Frankenstein or any one of George Carlin's many stand-up routines) and listening to his unique (often hilarious) insights into recent events. Most of all, I trusted him with any issue, especially his instinctive responses to human behavior. He was a loving uncle, father, teacher and friend to all who knew him. Like my grandmother, his heart was always in the right place, and he had a reputation for helping those who, through no fault of their own, had serious disadvantages. Having taught for over 30 years at inner-city schools in Los Angeles, he knew what it was like to make a difference in a young person's life, and to give them every opportunity to thrive. I will miss him always.

It has been a year since we lost our Dear Alex. The year has gone by faster than I thought it would considering what has transpired during this year! We lost our dear Alex just before the various shut downs took place! So much has changed! All those things I hear and see that remind me of Alex! There is the wonderful classical Music that he loved listening to, especially Beethoven’s Fifth that always brought him to tears! He surely was smiling at the National Championships the same year by both the LA Lakers and the LA Dodgers! We know you are smiling at the change to a new President next week! Dear Alex we love you and miss you! Always in our thoughts! Love, Sharlene
