Lonne hired me at JPL. He was a wonderful, compassionate, brilliant role model. I learned so much from him, both as an engineer and as a person. He was always kind and fair and like a dad to us all. I miss him.

Lonne, to me, was always a larger-than-life person who performed miracles time-and-time again. I'll give just one example. On Voyager, the Photo-polarimeter instrument had significant problems and was interfering with other instruments. It was shut down for both Jupiter encounters and the Principal Investigator was relieved of his duties. Lonne fixed the "dead" instrument from 500 million miles away. Using stellar occultations, the PP obtained incredibly detailed profiles of the rings of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, not to mention measurements of the planetary atmospheres and satellites. This accomplishment blew me away.
But that was just one accomplishment over a 40+ year career of outstanding accomplishments. Lonne's contributions to space and Earth science seemed endless.
He was a colleague and a good friend for over 4 decades. I will really miss him.

I met Lonne as a grad student at Laboratory for Space Physics (LASP) at University of Colorado, Boulder. I was finishing up my PhD and he encouraged me to apply for a post-doc at JPL, and for the Voyager 2 encounter with Neptune. He was a great teacher, mentor and friend. Thanks to him, my planetary career got off to a good start and I still use some of the tips/advice he gave me at the start of my career. I will miss him, even as I try to help the new, younger planetary scientists.
Thanks, Lonne, for a great opportunity! I will never forget you! I hope your family is able to enjoy reading stories of what a great person you were and were definitely one of JPL's best. R.I.P.

I met Lonne as a new and young JPL employee while working on the Galileo mission. He was funny and kind and helpful to someone just getting started in the field. May his memory always be for a blessing.

Lonne was one of the reasons Voyager was (is) the greatest space mission, ever. He was a friend, and always had kind words for the people he encountered throughout his journey. Thanks for everything, Lonne!

The thing I found so wonderful about Lonne was his incredible down-to-earthness for such a brilliant guy. He carried off Super Smart with such class and humor. I also felt so blessed to see the love he had for his wife Rickie. It was always on his heart sleeve. Such a loss. My love to everyone in your family, Cousin Kathy

Dear Ricki and Family,
It was such sad news to learn about Lonne's illness and passing.I feel so privileged to call him cousin, but more so,to know what incredible mensch he was throughout his entire life. I will treasure all our visits when I had a chance to meet with you when I came to California and saw you in Rochester. May his legacy be a source of strength and love for all of you.
Love,
