Obituary of Dorothy Newhouse

Dorothy Hayes Newhouse of Orange, CA, passed away on December 14, 2023 at age 95. Dorothy was born on August 14, 1928 in Los Angeles to Al and Addie Hayes. She grew up in El Sereno and Eagle Rock. After high school, she attended Woodbury Business College and studied commercial art and fashion design before beginning studies at UCLA, where she met her husband Gabriel. Dorothy and Gabe wed in 1950 and had five children. She completed her degree at UCLA and a teaching credential at Cal State Fullerton. She taught art for many years at Western High School in Anaheim. Over the years she explored different art media including drawing, painting, ceramics, lithography, silk screening, and photography and left many pieces of art for her family. Even after Dorothy left teaching and became a real estate broker, she helped to found Fun with Chalk Children’s Creative Festival to promote involvement in the arts and to provide funding for art education. She also particularly enjoyed baking and everything chocolate. Dorothy and Gabriel celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2020 before he passed away in November of that year. She is survived by four children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Dorothy was laid to rest by family and friends at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, December 20, 2023.
