I was just thinking of the truly good people in my life, those who just stand out as wonderful human beings, and thought of Mort yesterday. I believe this must be the Mort I knew... he Iooks a little different, but I hope I am correct. If not, please forgive me if I am wrong! I was 38 years old (I am 68 now), on my second career, an intern studying Marriage and Family Counseling at CSUDH. Mort was my supervisor. I had had many jobs by that time, but had never had a "boss" who was so very kind, patient, and understanding! He opened my eyes to a possibility I never knew existed. An authority figure...but one who was so good, so pure of heart, so compassionate. I will always remember him, his kindness and guidance will be with me always. Thank you, G-d, for allowing me to know him for even a little bit. -- Deborah Kurman

Some highlights from the eulogy I delivered at the funeral:
Mort Liner was born in the lower east side of Manhattan, NYC in 1935.
Early life was hard. Money was hard to come by. He lived in cramped tenements with 2 brothers and 2 sisters
Some nice memories of living next to a matzah factory and getting free "rejects", sights and sounds of the bristling immigrant community, shops and pushcarts
Train ride moving to California was in 1946.
Settled in Boyle Heights, went to Roosevelt High School, played basketball, met lifelong friends through AZA youth group.
Went to LA City College, graduated from LA State (CSULA) and served in the naval reserves (to avoid the army draft, of course).
Worked a few summers at Camp Roosevelt (Jewish camp) up in Idyllwild.
Worked odd jobs like selling programs at the Coliseum and Rose Ball, shipping with UPS, selling paper subscriptions for the LA Herald. Eventually, started his career as a teacher with LAUSD, where he was employed for over 40 years.
Lived with his folks in Fairfax in the late '50's, then moved into some bachelor quarters in Baldwin Hills, where he met my mom, Judy.
They married and bought a house in Palos Verdes in 1963.
He taught for the school district while pursuing a masters in psychology.
They had two kids - Heath was born in 1966, and Maureen in 1968.
Maureen had developmental disabilities, and Judy and Mort were fierce advocates for educational opportunities for the special needs community. Sadly, Maureen passed away at age 41 in 2010.
He built a reading center in Palos Verdes with his friend and partner Ron, and continued along with his career, always working for the school district by day and pursuing his own education and building his private practice by evening. Along the way, he earned his Educational doctorate degree.
He was a good man, always spending time with family and friends.
As a psychologist, he was a great listener, and helped hundreds of people with their struggles over the years.
He enjoyed James Michener books, and spy stories, and was generally very well read.
He liked Yiddishkeit, and Jewish music.
He listened to old time radio when he was a kid (although it was new radio at the time, right?), and would record programs off the radio onto cassettes in the '70s and '80s.
He liked gadgets, like all the Apple products and especially the watch.
He liked poker, horse races, and putting a little bit into the market.
He was a wonderful grandpa to my kids.
That was my dad
