I knew I had another picture of the Micegass crew. Here we are in a 2003 Newport to Ensanada race. Joe is at the Helm, John Mack on the Jib, Lawrence in the pit, and Greg on the rail. Good times!

I started sailing with Joe on Indigo Tiger back in 1996. We sailed many BYC Beer cans and Newport to Ensenada races. I learned alot about sailing, racing, and team work. Joe was a fierce competitor and knew the rules well. Thank you Joe for sharing your passion for sailboat racing with all that would cast off dock lines and head out to the sea.
Here is a picture of his boat partner and crew, John Mack, Jim, and Harold.

I knew Joe because I am part of a cancer support group that Joe helped start and participated in for many years.
Joe hosted the first CLL support group meeting that I attended, and he could not have been more friendly and welcoming. During the meeting each member of the group took a turn asking questions or sharing information. When Joe’s turn came, he was optimistic and encouraging. And no surprise that sailing was usually part of Joe’s discussion. We all knew how much being on the water meant to him.
Joe will be greatly missed.
My heartfelt condolences go out to his family

Over 35 years ago we were introduced to Joe when our previous CPA retired. A friend highly recommended Joe for the job because his life revolved around boats and travel, which matched our interest too. Over the next 35 years we looked forward to meeting Joe to do our taxes, which involved handing him all our tax papers, then quickly spending the next 2 to 3 hours swapping stories about all of our mutual adventures on the high seas and on the road. It was so great to have someone like Joe available who was so knowledgeable and could advise us concerning our business dealings. We will miss this dear friend and his enthusiasm for life.

Joe was a very interesting person. The times That I met him, he always had amazing stories. I really liked his stories about his cars and boats. He seemed really happy when he was telling me about them. For me he had a lot of charisma and I enjoyed every minute I spent with Joe.

I had the pleasure of being Joe's friend and one of his racing crew. After a particularly windless night the fleet sat motionless and within earshot. As participants recounted the struggle to even finish the race one skipper said: " It was bad enough we sat in the damp cold all night and couldn't finish, but, what I want to know is: Who in the hell was singing show tunes all night?" Joe and I just smiled and finished our drinks. Fair winds and a following sea Skipper.

So sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of Joe staying over at my house with you and regret we never got to enjoy the new boat with him. The pictures you sent showed such joy as he fixed up and brought her back to LA. I will hold that image of Joe, smiling and happy, in my heart.

As another one of Joe's 224 classmates, I actually wasn't close to him, but dated his sister, Ilene, for nearly two years. I felt compelled to listen to the funeral and learn more about him and was blown away by his father's tennis career -- I had no idea. His wife's stories were so fantastic, such a homage to a fantastic guy. My condolences to his family and, of course, Ilene.

Joe was a lifelong friend and high school classmate. We would have phone chats periodically and would get together when he would come back to Philadelphia. He was a kind and compassionate man and a real mensch. May his memory be a blessing to us all. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Joe was a lover of life and an adventurer. He never gave up, never took no for an answer. He could have quit this life several times but he decided there was still too much to live for, too many people in his life to love. What an inspiration he was to tackle a new boat despite all The challenges. He was knowledgeable about so many topics. He loved a good conversation with an interesting glass of wine. Joe will be missed.

Joe loved life! He had so much of it left to live. He was so looking forward to his new boat, and enjoying life when the Pandemic lifted. Joe and I go way back. I was fortunate to know Joe when I first moved to California years ago. He was a forthright friend, and confidant to me and many. He was a sweet and caring mensch.
As we all mourn our Joe, and in our grief, we will keep the happy memories we had with him up front. Many of us will speak his name, and remember him often. Baruch Dayan HaEmet.
'You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free'
As we used to say, 'see ya on da flip side'!

We were saddened to learn of Joe's passing and shall miss his warm, inviting, educating personality. My wife Elaine and I first met Joe when we were invited to attend a monthly CLL meeting. CLL is an enigma and when diagnosed, one searches to find answers. Our first meeting was at Joe's facility, where we met this fine man. He was disarming, gentile and accommodating, putting us at ease immediately. Pioneers like Joe encouraged me to become ever so more involved over the years. His tenacious spirit enabled him to overcome a mean mosquito and enjoy life again. When Joe notified us that he was throttling back his participation in the CLL world no one could blame him. We missed him but knew he was enjoying life. As fellow lovers of the sea Elaine and I wish Joe Fair Winds and Following Seas on his new journey. We shall meet again one day.

I will miss Joe so much. We’ve known each other since we were young teenagers at Plymouth Swim Club. Then Central High. California intervened, but we rediscovered each other some years ago. Then the statistical anomaly — we both had CLL. Joe was wonderfully knowledgeable about CLL. My professor because I am an avoider. His last words to me: “don’t worry, CLL isn’t gonna kill us.” You were correct, Joe. Sail on, brother.

Such a loss. My heart goes out to his family.
As a fellow CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) patient, I met Joe more than a dozen years ago when he had the great notion to meet up with fellow CLL patients at our homes and share our war stories and insider tips. He realized the uniqueness of CLL and felt that we needed our own support and education group with others who lived with our unique blood cancer. It would be different than other cancer groups. It was to be patient led (no nurses, no social workers) and it would be exclusively for CLL families.
Three of us first met in his living room. And as the say, the rest is history, with CLL Society’s 38 CLL specific support and education groups engaging nearly 2,000 members across the continent today.
In recent years, Joe had drifted away from CLL Society though he continued to serve on the patient advisory board. His CLL was quiescent and he wanted to spend time with his family and his boat. He was a busy guy. But he was proud of his legacy.
I will be forever in his debt. And so are all those who enjoy the benefits of one of the CLL Society support groups.
I mourn his loss. He was a trusted friend who told it like it was, a skilled and competitive sailor, and a pragmatic visionary.
I hope the winds are filling his sails wherever he is now.
