Larry and Barbara would stop by my stand at Pikes Place when visiting Seattle. It always made my day. He was always so patient and such a good sport while Barbara tried on lots of hats. I'm not an envious person but Barbara and Larry had a life together that was so very special. That guy was a special guy!

A father’s guiding hand always sits on the shoulder of his children. Your father was an extremely caring, funny and a kind man. I know that no matter where you are, he will always be watching over you. May you take comfort with the friends and family that surround you.

I remember the first time I met Larry Nevens well. A friend and I were going into a dorm at Gonzaga University where Greg was staying with a friend, after he had decided to "borrow" one of his parent’s cars and drive from LA to Spokane WA. Larry had flown in to mandate a return trip for his son and his car, and we met them as they were coming out of the dorm. Gregg introduced us to Larry who graciously invited us to have dinner with them. Thinking that perhaps that dinner might be a bit awkward, given the circumstances, we declined. This was a mistake, because it postponed the start of enjoyable meals with Larry. There were many more over the years, like the first Christmas in our new house, but certainly the one that was most impactful on my young children, was a dinner we all attended at a Salt Lake restaurant. The restaurant was serving a blue cheese which, of course, Larry knew all about, and of which he was particularly fond. He sent the waiter back to the kitchen to ask them to warm a piece of this cheese and bring it to the table so everyone could enjoy the particularly fine aroma that would be released when the cheese was warmed. This caused my children, for years following, to be reminded of Larry by the title they bestowed upon him: “Stinky-cheese Man”.
The Nevens family has been a part of our life for better than 40 years now, to the extent that I once explained a faux pas by claiming that my ignorance was due to the fact that “I don’t have any other Jewish family”. The ways that Larry made the world a better place are beyond my ability to number. I first noticed were his humor, his generosity and his joie de vivre. Adieu Larry, you are missed.

Out of the many pictures, the wedding photo really stands out. I remember it well, and the fact I was 5 months pregnant with my second child, makes it even more memorable. Barbara has always been the best Scrabble player, but Larry was the funniest person ever. I could never match his wit, but it didn't stop me from trying (always losing). I never saw as much of them as I wanted, but will always cherish the memories. When thing return to normal, hopefully, we can get together to drink a well-deserved toast to 'that guy'.

From: Diane and Peter Gray
Who or what came first the chicken, the egg or Larry? When we met over 60 years ago he was
an emerging entrepreneur in the egg business which hatched into all kinds of food products that
he and Barbara built into a gourmet livelihood and lifestyle. We remember him showing us with
pride the growing selections as he constantly added and expanded in the early years.
Without exception, Larry was the most complex person we've ever known yet he navigated through
this world in unique and unimaginable ways with a little Chutzpah thrown in for good measure. We
(Pete) each got married within 10 days of one another in early 1961 and have shared a lifetime of memories.
Children of similar ages and all their antics and challenges. Countless meals, food and wine experiences.
travel, sports, highs and lows of life or good times and not so good.
He was instrumental, with Barbara, in bringing us together nearly 47 years ago after one of those bumps
in the road. We are forever grateful for his match making skills yet it's hard to cover all that he's been
in our lives when so many are visual impressions etched in our memories and stored in our minds. Some
are visible in photos or kids letters from camp. We'll have them while we no longer have the Larry we
knew and loved. And, Diane will miss dancing with the best jitterbugger ever!!
We both fondly remember that last slice of life we shared earlier this year when we brought over a small
lemon meringue pie that we quartered and ate together. That's the freshest image of a a man who loved
to taste bits of food and share them with friends and family so that we were all nourished when we left
his home. The table is still full but there's an empty chair where he once sat and we miss him.

I had only spoken with Barbara and Larry on the phone since we live on opposite coasts. However, the day finally arrived when the West came to the East! Larry was everything I had imagined; funny, kind, funny, generous, funny, affectionate, and funny. Did I mention funny?
Early on, Barbara wanted me to get to know my long-lost cousin so she had him type long emails laying out the story of his life. As I read each sentence, this gentle giant of a man, was coming to life, right before my eyes. I learned of his struggles and his joys, his introduction to Barbara... and her father, and of course, all about his eggs! I am grateful to Barbara for being so wise by allowing Larry and me to meet, before we actually met.
Barbara, Gregg, Andrea, and family,
John and I offer you are deepest condolence. We remember Larry with fondness. We are with you in spirit.
Love,
Francie and John

It all started with a manicure. Suddenly, these two wonderful people became part of my life. Barbara, beautiful, elegant, intelligent, and Larry, warm and loving with the zaniest sense of humor I have ever known. This crazy guy with the mischievous twinkle in his eye was always so much fun to be with. Because my last name is Carr, there were endless transportation jokes, and I laughed heartedly each time, even though I knew what was coming. Dear, sweet, good hearted Larry. I loved that guy and I’m proud to have called him my friend.

I miss my friend. In fact, I have been dreaming about him a lot since his passing. I used to visit their home 3 or 4 times a week. We traveled together, Barbara, Larry and I, all over Europe, to Hawaii, to Japan, to China, to Australia, to New Zealand. How could I not be deeply saddened by the same loss everyone else is experiencing? After a terrible ordeal, you are at peace now, my friend.

Barbara has been in my life since we were 6, Larry has been in my life since around 1960 - over 60 years. How is that possible? I remember the wedding - so beautiful - and we were all so young. I have a picture in my head, from 1961, of Larry coming home to their first apartment with a bucket full of eggs - WHAT! Learned that bakeries used frozen eggs - who knew? Have so many memories with the family at the Allot house - the beginning of Allied, scary but exciting. Then the move to Mooncrest - the first time I went up there with Barbara and Larry to see the house; Larry so concerned about the big move. I remember telling him how well he was doing and was sure he would continue doing so, as he did.
He was such a hard worker, but always cared about his wife, children and friends. He once told me I never had to worry because he and Barbara would always be there for me. I knew he meant it, and felt warm, loved and cared for. When I found my son, he made him (his namesake) feel welcome and always teased him. He always teased me, also, never failing to call me Evil twine. Where the hell he got that name, I have no idea; but I knew he loved me and it was his term of endearment.
He introduced me to Regianno when he dragged me across the floor of Moscone Center to share another food experience. Oh how I remember that moment - a completely new taste sensation. And the many times I was at the house when he could not wait to share another new kind of cheese with me. We had so much fun during those moments. And another sight I keep seeing, the two of us looking in the freezer to decide which types of ice cream we would have.
Larry was a kind, gentle, caring soul. His sense of humor was sometimes wacky, but he felt strongly about making people laugh and feel good. He was LARRY!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to miss him, a lot. Thank you Larry for the memories, the love and the friendship. Evy

I have known Larry my whole life and because of who he was, I have very vivid memories from an early age. Barbara and my father, Allen Silver, were cousins and my dear grandmother Julia was Barbara's niece. This was a big mutual admiration society. My grandmother and Barbara adored each other, my dad and Barbara adored each other, and my mom and dad and Larry and Barbara were the best of friends and loved to travel, dine, drink, and celebrate together. As kids, we thought Larry was outrageous (and he was) and we loved hanging around with him at family gatherings and holidays. He was so warm, funny, generous, and just a great guy. As I got older, I always looked forward to our visits together and fully enjoyed the interesting conversations I had with him through the years. He loved to tell stories about his childhood and adventures through life and it was a joy to talk to him. Dinner parties, weddings, holidays were never boring with Larry around. I'm grateful I got to visit with Larry and Barbara when I was working in Los Angeles a few years ago. They are some of my favorite relatives and I cherish those times.

The Nevens have been part of our family lives since we moved from the east coast in the 1950's. We have so many memories beginning with visits to the egg farm in Fontana (which seemed like another country to us Valley people). Then there were the get togethers at family celebrations (e.g., retirement celebrations and Succot parties at JoBeth/Jim Schwartz' home). I loved Larry's humor and watching the loving, tender care he received from my personal hero, Barbara.. With Barbara's lead, our family developed a family tree on my Grandmother's side. His memory is and will be for a blessing.

I had the pleasure of meeting Larry only one time at a special "reunion" dinner with Gregg's family. Gregg and Pam adopted Wonde and Martha at the same time I adopted my daughter. I was blessed to become friends with Gregg and Barbara in Ethiopia and the entire family has had a special place in my heart ever since. When we reunited at a dinner to celebrate Wonde's graduation, I met Pam and Larry in person finally. I remember Larry for his wonderful sense of humor that evening, he had us all laughing many times! I am blessed to have met Larry and know this amazing family. My condolences are with you all and I send my love. I hope that in time the wonderful memories will bring comfort and smiles to the entire family. Maren sends her condolences and is so happy she had the chance to meet Larry too!

Dear Barbara, Andrea, Gregg, please extend to the rest of your family. We lived right next store to you for so many years. We were so fortunate to become so close to all of you. Larry was always so special to the Shanfeld family. I think one of my fondest memories is Larry just walking down that long hill in his pajamas, robe and slippers to get the mail. We would just look at each other and chuckle. He brought so much joy to the top of our hill. Many laughs, and lots of love. He will forever be missed. Our deepest condolences. Larry always had a smile, and usually a laugh to go with it. He’s the only person I’ve ever known who always seemed delighted...or amused?...by the world. And one of the most generous men I know. Even though I haven’t been able to see much of either Barbara or Larry since moving, his sense of laughter, and knowing that it is there, will be missed.

I will miss Larry, and not getting to see him one more time, and his place in a little group that was very significant to me, centered around my late father-in-law Burt Fink and Larry and Barbara. They had the good life, knew it, and had a great deal of fun. Larry and I loved cracking puns and cracking each other up. After dinner parties at Burt's he always did ALL the dishes, and when Burt sent out sometimes wonderful, sometimes ill-researched tidbits, Larry was always a total gentleman in acknowledging the posts as an effort to entertain and delight. I am gratified Larry is being so celebrated, was so loved in life and is being so mourned in death, and my thoughts are with Barbara and Gregg and all their family.

Gregg and I had been good friends for some time, but this was the first opportunity I had to spend time with Larry. The easy and unique humor and fine company made for a fantastic time. I had old, beat-up clubs, and Larry offered the use of his driver...and I loved it. The next day a full set of the same woods showed up at my house.
