Obituary of Gloria Segal

Please share a memory of Gloria to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
GLORIA ROTH SEGAL. Many people mourn her passing on February 2, 2025, at home in Las Vegas. She was born in Chicago, Illinois to Bessie and Nathan Roth (immigrants from the old country) on May 23, 1930. Seeking the sun (and perhaps more importantly escape from the snow), the Roth family moved to Altadena, California (an obscure hamlet north of Pasadena, now known as the site of the devastating Eaton Fire.) Upon arrival, Gloria attended Pasadena City College and afterward graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, after spending a summer at the Brandeis Institute in Simi Valley. While attending Berkeley, she became a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority and met her future husband, Herbert, who was stationed at the U.S. Army Presidio in San Francisco. Upon Herb learning that he was being shipped to Regensburg, Germany, he and Gloria married stateside and Gloria (with her parents in tow) followed him overseas. Upon returning stateside, Gloria and Herb started their family on the "two-year plan": Stephen born in 1954, Jeffrey born in 1956 and Gary born in 1958. Although her children were all born at St. Luke's Hospital in Pasadena, Gloria always involved her children in Jewish life at the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center (PJTC), serving in many capacities including Sisterhood President and organizing catering in the kitchen. She was consistently an active member of her sons’ PTAs. Gloria's involvement in Jewish life included her becoming Chair of the Los Angeles Jewish Federation's San Gabriel Valley Division. Gloria and Herb raised their three boys in Upper Hastings Ranch and their sons all graduated from Pasadena High School. After going off to college, the boys would still return to Pasadena to spend the High Holidays and other festive occasions with their parents. Soon the boys started on their marriages--Stephen to Sharon in Minneapolis where they continue to reside; Jeffery to Lauren in Beverly Hills where they continue to reside; and Gary to Phyllis who relocated to Las Vegas. Throughout their marriage, Gloria always worked alongside Herb as a bookkeeper in the pharmacy--first Reliable Pharmacy at Washington Avenue and Altadena Drive and then California Pharmacy on South Lake Street. After Herb's untimely passing on January 1, 2000, Gloria ran the pharmacy, ultimately deciding to sell it and relocate to Las Vegas where Gary and his wife Phyllis were raising their children. Upon relocation, Gloria started a new career--becoming a realtor in which she participated for many years. Nonetheless, Gloria's life always revolved around her children and then her grandchildren: Stephen and Sharon's Aliza and Gabriel, Jeffrey and Lauren's Eric and Taryn, and Gary and Phyllis' Jessica and Daniel. She has been blessed with the opportunity of celebrating mitzvahs with her family, including every Bar Mitzvah of her nephews Howard (Faith), Mickey (Lee) and Sheldon Segal, the weddings of Mickey and Lee's children--Allison, Matthew and Andrew, as well as the weddings of her nieces Cathy (Bobby) and Dayle (Dennis) in Chicago, and the weddings of her nieces Linda (Art) and Sandy (Howie) in California as well as the weddings of her nephew the late Todd Norton and her niece Kimberly to Aaron. More recently, Gloria attended the wedding of her granddaughter Aliza to Andy in Bellingham, Washington and her grandson Daniel to Nicole outside of Flagstaff, Arizona. She also met her first great grandchild David and knew about the birth of her first great granddaughter Iris to Stephen's daughter Aliza and Andy. Gloria also has an additional niece, Pat and nephew, Bruce. Gloria is the youngest of three sisters--Bernice who passed away in California (after losing her husband Jack) and Estelle in Chicago (after losing her husband Harold). Gloria continued to reside in Las Vegas and during her last years she received daily care from Gary, his late partner, Johnny Bob, Gary's children and good friends, Dawn and Robbie Day. What many of us will miss is Gloria's directness and her unwavering desire to tell everyone how to live their lives while saying it with love and true caring. We will all remember her joyous and happy smile maintained until her peaceful passing. Gloria will be laid to rest next to Herb at Mt. Sinai, Hollywood Hills on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. Services will be held in the Chapel, and you can be a part of this event by using the following zoom link (for live or later viewing): https://mount-sinai-memorial-parks-and-mortuaries.livecontrol.tv/e7324939.
